As an activist and facilitator, George Lakey has worked over the years with Canadian activist groups, NGOS, and labour unions, from Nova Scotia to B.C. Lakey was smuggled across the border to the Burmese jungle to teach in a “jungle university” located in a guerrilla encampment, led the training for coal miners in their successful strike against Pittston Coal Company in Appalachia, and led peacekeeper training in South Africa for the African National Congress during the lead-up to the revolutionary elections of 1991 that ended apartheid. His work in leading over 1500 workshops on five continents is reflected in his new book. Lakey co-founded Training for Change in Philadelphia, which in two decades has led training in over 20 countries. In his new book he presents the core principles and proven techniques of direct education. Unlike other books on group facilitation, Lakey emphasizes critical issues related to diversity, as well as authenticity and emotions.
